Science Friday: what the Big Bang would look like as blown glass, and your ticket to the Guggenheim

Ever feel like you don't 'get' modern art?

If you're of the belief science is for some people, and art is for others, check out Josiah McElheny's sculptures. Physics Central has a great blog on McElheny's art, and cosmologist David Weinberg's paper on the science behind McElheny's Island Universe.

"The center represents the origin of the universe and the outer edge represents the present day, moving from one end to the other depicts the entire 14 billion year history of the universe.

The sculpture has 230 rods coming off of it, each with its own random length ending in either a group of exquisite glass discs and globes, representing galaxy clusters; or a single lamp, representing a quasar." more...

Lady Fingers? No way. Galileo fingers? OK!

Yeah, his fingers are on display at the Galileo Museum (formerly the Museum of the History of Science) in Venice.  The route they took to get there was a bit circuitous, but the Irish Times lays it on the line, and also runs through some of the other cool items on display at the museum.

Saturday's Games Shindig

Code a game in a day? What better to do with your Saturday! Kicks off at 9:30am sharp Saturday June 19th - more details here. This event is hosted by the Science Gallery and is kindly sponsored by PopCap Games and GameDevelopers.ie as well as the School Of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin. This event is in association with the Interactive Entertainment Technology MSc at Trinity of which both event organisers Jonathan Ruttle and John O'Kane are graduates.

Volunteer at London's Natural History Museum

Nice work if you can get it... or rather, nice volunteer experience.  The NH museum is looking for interns in their interpretation and Design department.

Exhibit your work in the Guggenheim

Perhaps an even longer shot-- the Guggenheim will be accepting submissions for an upcoming video installation over YouTube.  Entries will be whittled down to the top 200 picks, of which the top 20 will be exhibited.  Populist pandering, or innovative, progressive curation? The jury is out.

Biorhythm & Electric Picnic

Remember, sign up for your Membership+ before June 30th to be entered in a draw to join the SG crew at Science Gallery, and to get your VIP invite to Biorhythm!
