Science Gallery receives Special Commendation at European Museum of Year Awards

Some exciting news! Science Gallery was one of three cultural institutions singled out for a Special Commendation at the prestigious European Museum of the Year Awards 2010.

Science Gallery Director, Michael John Gorman received the Special Commendation at a ceremony in Tampere, Finland, on Saturday May 22nd May 2010. In introducing Science Gallery the judges mentioned that the innovative approaches of Science Gallery to engaging the public with science and the arts could be inspiring to the European museum community.

Described by many as the Oscars of the museum world, Science Gallery was one of three European Museums to receive a Special Commendation out of 43 institutions that had reached the final nominations stage. The overall award went to Ozeaneum museum, a large museum in Stralsund, Germany dedicated to the underwater world.

We're very excited to receive this special commendation and to be recognised at the EMYA awards after being in existence for only two years. It also demonstrates a recognition at the European level of the critical importance of Science Gallery's overall mission and vision.

A big thank you to all of the people who make Science Gallery what it is especially our members, members + and visitors. And the tremendous start-up support we receive from partners including Trinity College Dublin, Wellcome Trust, Google, Dell, ICON, Wyeth, Ulster Bank and the Irish government.

We all hope this award will assist us in growing further support, as we look forward to Dublin's opportunity to make a huge splash as European City of Science in 2012
