February's Selection: Decoding Love by Andrew Trees
Relationships should be so simple. You meet someone. You fall in love. If all goes well, that person falls in love with you. And as the fairy tale says, you both live happily ever after. But the reality is rarely so simple...
Decoding Love will be available from the Science Gallery shop from February 1.
Author Andrew Trees will be joining the conversation via Skype.
Decoding Love takes a rational approach to that most irrational of pursuits, the search for love. Imagine Jane Austen’s romances rewritten by people like Charles Darwin and Adam Smith, and you will have some idea of what sort of book this is. The simple premise behind Decoding Love is that, despite our ingrained prejudice, our current model of finding love is deeply flawed, and science can actually provide a great deal of insight into our romantic quest. It will take something we think we know well—how to find love—and reveal that many of our assumptions are wrong.
About the author:
Andrew Trees has written on a wide array of topics, ranging from television to the American founding fathers, receiving a Ph.D. in American history from the University of Virginia in1999 and also earned an M.A. in English literature. Trees spent almost two years researching Decoding Love, which examines the latest research on love and human attraction. He explains how romance plays a key role in what makes us human and how it has even helped shape the size and sophistication of our brains. Read more about the author and his research here.
About Prism Book Club:
What happens when you look through a prism? You see the same stuff as before, but from a different angle. Maybe you suddenly understand something from another’s viewpoint, or see the complexity hiding beneath the simple veneer. Science Gallery’s newest club, PRISM, is a place for members to get together, rant, show off and learn about exciting topics in science, as brought to you through popular science books. We invite you to join this monthly book club to listen, discuss and debate!
