Thomas Banchoff: Seeing the Fourth Dimension

Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - 18:30 - 20:00
art geometry

UPDATE: Thomas will join us by VIDEO CONFERENCE DUE TO VOLCANIC DISRUPTIONS

What does it mean to see  objects from a dimension higher than our own? What does the fourth dimension mean to artists like Salvador Dali and writers like Edwin  Abbott Abbott (Flatland) and Madeleine L'Engle (A Wrinkle in  Time)? Come see how interactive computer graphics makes it possible for us to explore shapes that extend our imaginations into the fourth  dimension.

Thomas Banchoff is an American mathematician at Brown University specializing in geometry. Thomas is best known for his research in differential geometry in three and four dimensions and his efforts to develop methods of computer graphics in the early 1990s.

As a groundbreaking computer graphics developer since the 60’s, Thomas will discuss geometry and art, fourth dimension art and will finish with an on-line gallery tour featuring some of his “classic” computer graphics from around the globe.

As event has been changed to video conference, there will be no charge for admission. Those who have purchased tickets will be re-imbursed.
