The two-day SPORT, SWEAT AND SCIENCE event at the Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin will get under the skin of Ireland's elite athletes in this living exhibition to measure athletic performance. <br /><br />For two days (April 2-3) the Science Gallery will become a Human Performance Lab where members of the public can come in to test their own athletic ability against the results of GAA stars Michael Fennelly (Kilkenny) and Bryan Cullen (Dublin) as the TCD Sports Centre and the Human Performance Lab measure endurance, strength and skill using the latest scientific processes. The SPORT, SWEAT AND SCIENCE event is supported by Science Gallery founding partner Ulster Bank. </p><p>Keep checking the website for further updates about events and talks.</p><p> </p><p><u><b>FITNESS TESTS</b></u><br /><br />In addition to seeing the top athletes perform in the Human Performance Lab, visitors are welcome to try a range of of fitness tests to see how you measure up to Ireland's elite athletes. Participants must wear suitable training attire, including proper footwear (e.g. runners). </p><p> </p><p><u><b>No Pain, No Gain: Treadmill Challenge</b></u><br />How long can you run before you call it quits? Get on the treadmill for a graded incremental test that will push you to the limits of exhaustion. Watch as your heart rate and blood lactate are projected on the big screen after every exercise element and see how you measure up to athletes from various sports. </p><p> </p><p><u><b>Walk the Walk: a Walk-in Challenge</b></u></p><p>Join the 12 minute walking test on a treadmill with varying degrees of elevation to test your day-to-day fitness level - suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. No pre-booking required for this challenge.</p><p> </p><p><u><b>Quest for the Yellow Jersey: Programmable Bike</b></u><br />Ever wonder what it would be like to compete in the Tour de France? Jump on the Human Performance Lab's programmable bike to experience a simulation of the endurance requirements for a cycling race to see if you can keep up with the world's best as your metabolic rate, heart rate and blood lactate are measured across time and exercise intensity. <br /><br /><u><b></b></u></p><p><u><b>Body Tune-up: Open Demo </b></u><br />How does your fitness compare to elite competitors? Grip strength, percentage body fat, lung capacity, flamingo balance test, body mass index, crucifix test of shoulder musculature endurance and explosive capacity are all tested in this all around fitness test. Drop in, no registration required.<br /><br /><u><b></b></u></p><p><u><b>Stroke Symmetrics: Kayak Ergometer </b></u><br />Even the smallest inconsistencies in force profile, kayak stroke and muscle activation pattern can have a huge impact on a kayaker's performance. Watch as elite flatwater kayakers have their muscle activity and stroke force profiles assesed through increased exercise intensities. <br /><br /><u><b></b></u></p><p><u><b>Total Body Control: Rowing</b></u><br />Can athletes really control their heartrate? This test highlights the importance of controlling heart rate during training by evaluating changes across time in blood lactate and exercise load in rowers during a simulated aerobic / anaerobic threshold training session. <br /><u><b></b></u></p><p> </p><p><u><b>Fast and Furious: Studio Cycling </b></u><br />Performed on the new Schwinn IC Elite bikes, this studio cycling class in a club-like atmosphere is sure to get your pulses racing! Improve your aerobic and anaerobic fitness watch your heart rate projected in front of you. Fast and furious bursts are followed by rest intervals to push you to your max; while burning A LOT of calories. Give it a go at Science Gallery in a unique environment. To participate, email sport@sciencegallery.com with STUDIO CYCLING in the subject line with your name and mobile number by 31:03:09. Spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please note that to participate you need to sign a waiver and health declaration. </p><p>Studio Cycling will take place on Thursday (02:04:09) at 13:00 and 19:00 and Friday (03:04:09) at 13:00. Shower and changing facilities will be available in the Trinity College Sports Centre.</p><p> </p><p>02.04.09 at 15:00<br /><u><b>The Physics of Sport</b></u><br />Studio 2 - No pre-booking required, event free. <br /><br />Lecturer in the Physics Department at Trinity College Dublin, Mauro Ferreira will show how basic physics can explain a lot about the way we move. From a simple walk in the park to the movement performed by top-class athletes, these physical laws are behind every type of movement performed by human beings. </p><p><br />02.04.09 at 19:00<br /><b><u>Maximising Performance and Monitoring of Training in Sport</u></b><br />PACCAR Theatre - No pre-booking required, event free.</p><p>Lecturer & MSc Sports Medicine Co-ordinator, Nicholas Mahony will give an overview of the components of fitness and outline the key factors that need to be considered by athletes and coachesto help maximise performance.The talk will cover the following aspects of sports and exercise medicine and science;</p><p><br />1. Pre season health checks / Optimum nutrition<br />2. Initial testing of baseline fitness / strength / skills<br />3. Realistic short and long term goal setting<br />4. Pre - Season planning (periodisation)<br />5. Optimum training weekly / monthly cycles of training and rest<br />6.
