Small quantities of cobalt salts were used to create the rich and distinctive blue colour of these glass bottles. The use of cobalt blue spread from its original source in ancient Persia westward in Islamic mosaics, Mediterranean pottery, medieval cathedral stained glass, Delft tiles and English chinaware, as well as east to appear on Ming vases. This distinctive pigment gave value to finely crafted Chinese porcelain and to everyday objects like these glass bottles.
