URANIUM, U

Our troubled image of the element uranium is due almost entirely to its use as a nuclear fuel, although its salts can also be used to create bright and fluorescent colours in glass and ceramics. This artwork uses uranium glass to create a sculpture of Sizewell Nuclear Power Station. Ultraviolet light from underneath the sculpture excites particles of uranium dioxide inside the glass to generate a bright, acid lime green glow. While one of the Sizewell stations is currently being decommissioned, another is planned. This piece explores our nuclear dreams and their legacy.
